In October 2024, I spent 2 weeks in Japan with my wife Christina and our good friends Chuck and Ashley. We visited Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, taking nearly 2000 photos along the way. I wanted to caption and share the photos but didn't want to spend hours doing it manually.
So after manually filtering out duplicates and not so great photos, I built a pipeline using the photo metadata, the SerpAPI and Claude 3.5 Sonnet to auto-generate captions with AI that are pretty good! Other then the information I fed Claude in the system prompt, 100% of every caption and point of interest on this site is AI generated. The system also uses the Instructor library to extract interesting cultural and historical tidbits from each image, making it easy to learn more about what you're seeing. The AI captions are not 100% perfect, but they're a fun way to learn more about our trip and Japan.
I also used AI through the Cursor IDE to build this website over a weekend.
For more technical details about how the AI captioning works, check out the about page. The full code is available on GitHub.
